What items are recyclable?

My parents and brother keep on recycling a lot of weird stuff that don't look recyclable like paper bags and plastic coverings from ham that we buy from publix. it's a real mess and i just wanted to know how would i know if the items are recyclable. i know aluminum cans and plastic bottles are recyclable, but what else?
